Prayers for Haiti — DOK Update

An update: Daughter and Seminarian, Marie Carmel Chery (see the pretty lady in the tent, Haiti scrolling pictures below) called Joyce Pipkin on her cell phone from her tent at the Soccer Field where 3,000 are staying in downtown Port au Prince! She and her family are OK but lost their home in Leogane. She is going to try to help find out the status of the 40 ladies of the Cathedral who were ready to schedule their admission / chartering service.

All Daughters in the chapter at St. Matthias, Cherident are safe, and all Daughters in the chapters at St. Mark's Church, Trouin have survived, although one Daughter, Yva, had both legs broken when the church fell on her.

Another update — At St. Marc's, Trouin, there were 4 parishoners killed. They were not Daughters. Yva Francois is a Daughter in the St. Marguerite chapter. She did break both legs when the church fell. She is in the hospital in the Hinche area. Pere Fruitho has talked with her and she is doing as well as expected. Mne. Georgette Duversaint, President of the chapter has said the rest are ok. Pere Fritho has called the Macon, Ga Haitian Hope team to say that the Marines, who did make one drop of supplies have not returned. The people in the mountains are running out of food and also need some clean water. There is a Catholic and Adventist community in the village and everyone seems to be trying to help each other. St. Mathias, Cheridant, Mne Grecieuse Augustin, President St.Mary's chapter said they were all ok. I do not know about supplies. Haitian Education Foundation has contacts there and that is how I have been able to get information. Keep Haiti in your prayers.

We give thanks to God for all those known to be safe: the seminarians, including the Master’s Fund recipients pictured below; the presidents of the chapters at Cherident and Trouin; and the chapter in formation at Gros Morne, which is in an area that seems not to be affected.

We give thanks also that the family of Deacon Marivel de Milien’s husband, The Rev. Smith Milien, is safe. And we give thanks that DOK Joyce Pipkin and her husband, John, are now back in the US. Joyce and John flew from SC to Haiti the day of the earthquake and had just arrived at the home of friends above Port au Prince when the earthquake struck. From outside the house they watched the buildings collapse in the city below.

Please pray for protection and the success of all those participating in relief work.

NEWS FROM AROUND THE WORLD

From the International Chair

As we hold the Daughters of the King and the people of Haiti in our fervent prayers, we must remember all that we have to be thankful for. In this, the 125th anniversary year of our founding, we give thanks to God for the many ways He is blessing the Order internationally.

India

The first DOK chapter in India is in formation (see ladies below)! A Daughter from Western NC, Shawnee Irwin, traveled to Durgapur, India at the end of January to begin the study with ten women there. The Rev. Janet Echols, a DOK and missionary in Pune, India, also traveled across the country to assist with the formation of the new chapter. Please keep Shawnee, Janet, St. Michael’s Church, the Rev. Swagata Das, and the Durgapur women in your prayers.

Daughters in India

Please keep them in your prayers during the three months training and discernment process.

Ecuador

Plans are being made for the first DOK chapter in Ecuador! The Rev. Margarita Santana, DOK National Chaplain in the Dominican Republic, will be making a second visit to Quito in April to begin the study with a group of interested women. Please pray for Rev. Margarita and the women in and around Quito, who will come together for the study.

Israel

Several women at Christ Church, Jerusalem are discussing the possibility of a chapter there. Marie Howanstine Moubarak, a DAL at Christ Church, will be holding an informational meeting soon. Please pray for Christ Church, the Rev. David Pileggi, and the women who may be called into the Order. Pray also for Marie and her husband, Andre Moubarak, who are both involved in ministries of healing and reconciliation in Israel. Due to the unique challenges facing Christian ministries in Israel, strong prayer warriors are needed. Please commit these concerns to your daily prayers if you are able. Pray especially that women of different backgrounds can come together as witnesses to the reconciling power of the Gospel.

Haiti

DOK Joyce Pipkin’s visit to Haiti was cut short by the devastating earthquake. Gail Moulton was scheduled to arrive a few days later, and was to meet with Joyce to begin plans for the first DOK National Assembly in Haiti. Needless to say, these plans have been put on hold due to the earthquake. Please pray for all the Daughters in our four Senior Chapters and two Junior Chapters in Haiti, and for the two chapters in formation in Gros Morne and at the demolished Cathedral in Port au Prince. Pray and give generously—to our DOK Self-Denial Fund, to Episcopal Relief and Development, to the Dominican Development Group, or wherever the Lord leads you.

New Members of the International Committee

I am very grateful that two experienced, committed Daughters have agreed to assume vital roles on the International Committee. Joan Engskow is now coordinating Prayer Partners and Mary Dawson is serving as Translations Coordinator. Also serving on the International Committee are the Regional Coordinators, who are maintaining contact and answering inquiries about starting new chapters in different parts of the world. Many thanks to all of these women who are giving of their time and talent to serve our growing international membership!

Prayer Partner Coordinator — Joan Engskow jengskow@bellsouth.net

Joan Engskow has done an excellent job facilitating prayer partnerships while serving on past National Councils. I am very grateful that she has agreed to oversee this important ministry again. Please contact Joan if your chapter would like to partner in prayer with an international chapter.

Translations Coordinator—Mary Dawson mariah.dok@gmail.com

The Order has recently purchased translation software which will greatly enhance our ability to provide materials for international Daughters in their own languages. Mary has agreed to oversee the translation process—which will involve computer translation with a follow-up review by native speakers. She has extensive experience in this area, and we are fortunate that she is willing to share her expertise. Please contact Mary if you are a native speaker of another language and would be willing to review some of our computer-translated materials. We need Spanish, French, Italian, German, Portuguese, Kiswahili, & Bengali reviewers at the moment!

Regional Coordinators

Please contact these members of our International Committee for information regarding chapter formation in different parts of the world.

Thank-You!

Many, many thanks to all of you who have recently contacted me about becoming prayer partners, or providing financial support for the international program. Your prayers and gifts are vital to our growing international ministry. As I mentioned above, you can now contact Joan Engskow to become a prayer partner, and you can continue to contact me or the National Office if you would like to make a gift of any amount. God bless you for blessing our Order internationally and for reflecting Christ’s light to the world.

Almighty God, whose Son our Savior Jesus Christ is the light of the world: Grant that your people, illumined by your Word and Sacraments, may shine with the radiance of Christ’s glory, that He may be known, worshipped, and obeyed to the ends of the earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, now and for ever. Amen. Collect for Epiphany, The Book of Common Prayer

International Chapters of the Order

International Chapters may be formed in autonomous churches of the Anglican Communion or churches in communion with the Episcopal Church. A list of these churches may be found in the current edition of the Episcopal Church Annual. They may develop their own handbook and bylaws patterned after those of The Order of the Daughters of the King, Inc., and adapted to the discipline and forms of their own church. Annual membership dues and contributions to the Funds are not required but the chapter and/or its members are encouraged to subscribe to The Royal Cross. The National Office maintains a separate list of International Chapters.

International Chapters are required to submit an annual report to the National Office of the Order (including a list of the officers and members of the chapters) until a diocesan or national organization is formed in the church of the International Chapter; then annual reports will be submitted directly to the International Chapter's diocesan or national organization.

International Chapters are strongly encouraged to maintain a close relationship with The Order of the Daughters of the King, Inc., and to attend the Assemblies, the National meetings of the Order and to send representatives. They are welcome to participate in all activities and will have voice but no vote (Art. IV, Sec. 1, Para. D, Subpara. 5)

How to form an International Chapter of the Order of the Daughters of the King

  • Obtain the approval of the Bishop and clergy in charge.
  • Three or more baptized women are needed to form a chapter.
  • Contact the National Office of The Order of the Daughters of the King, Inc., and request the necessary forms and publications. (The National Office will notify the National President, the Regional Coordinator and/or appropriate provincial president, and the International Chair, who will assist as needed.)
  • If necessary, ask the National Office for guidance in translation of materials.
  • Identify a local leader to coordinate the study. The clergy in charge or his/her designee may need to assist with facilitating the study sessions.
  • Hold a “Service for the Beginning of the Preparation” found in the National Study Guide and in the National Handbook.
  • If possible, provide a copy of the National Handbook and the National Study Guide for each woman. The National Handbook is available from the National Office and the National Study Guide can be downloaded from the website: www.dok-national.org. In some cases, two Handbooks and two Study Guides can be gifts to the forming chapter. Ask the National Office staff about this.
  • Meet regularly to complete the National Study Guide, in order to learn about the Order and be prepared for admission. At least twelve weeks are needed as a period of discernment and preparation.
  • Determine a date for the institution of the Chapter and the admission of new members, after consultation with the clergy and Regional Coordinator. The Regional Coordinator (or her representative) will present the new members, the officers to be installed, and the Charter to the presiding clergy.
  • Choose a name for the chapter and select chapter officers near the end of the preparation period. Prepare a list of participants who have completed the study and obtain written verification of this list from the clergy in charge.
  • The completed Application for Charter form and registration fee for each member should be submitted to the National Office at least six weeks prior to the scheduled Institution date. Scholarships are always available to cover registration fees if needed, and can be arranged at this time by the National Office staff.
  • Hold the Service of Institution and Admission on the date established when applying for the Charter.
