“Celebrating 125 years of Prayer, Service and Evangelism”
Dear Daughters,
Welcome to the Daughters-at Large (DAL) page of The Order of the Daughters of the King National Website! I am glad you are here! Being a Daughter-at Large is a unique situation. While we took vows within our community of faith with other DOK, now we find ourselves without a chapter to support us. I pray that this page will be one way you feel part of the body. I also pray that the information and ideas on this page will keep you connected, actively living into your vows of prayer, service and evangelism. Following are some ways to do that.
This Triennium, I am asking all DAL to pray specific prayers requests. The first request made of the DAL is from Loriann Hansel. Please read Loriann’s request and begin praying for persecuted Christians around the world. Stay tuned to this page for new prayer requests at least on a monthly basis. Be encouraged and Press On!
FHS,
Chesley Vohden
National Chair for DAL
My name is Loriann Hansel (DAL).
I do have a prayer request for our fellow Christians all around the world. Many Christians who actively share their faith experience trials or some form of ridicule (persecution) in every nation on earth. Christians in these countries are considered low class citizens and face specific human rights violations committed against them. Many Christians are kept from obtaining Bibles or other Christian literature by government policy or practice.
I would like for Daughters of the King and DAL to write to the Ambassador of each country. Go to the United Nations website at www.un.org and also, write a letter to the officials of foreign governments, the editor of your local newspaper and to your friends.
Concerning the atrocities happening to Christians around the world, countries such as: China, Tibet, Columbia, Cuba, Cyprus, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Libya, Morroco, Nigeria, North Korea, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria, Turkey, Vietnam, Russia and Yemen. These countries are just to name a few.
Hundreds of thousands of Christians risk their lives by gathering to worship Jesus every week. We in America may never know the extent of such repression. Pray for the Holy Spirit would give you special things and people to pray for in that country. Daughters of the King are a part of the persecuted church.
“Open your mouth for the speechless
In the cause of all who are appointed to die.
Open your mouth, judge righteously;
And plead the cause of the poor and needy.”
— Proverbs 31: 8,9
Please pray for Christians who are held prisoners for their faith.
For His Sake,
Loriann Hansel

I became a member of the order in 1975, while recovering from cancer surgery. The order has been important in my life, giving me support and holding me accountable throughout the years. My chapter membership was in the Diocese of Los Angeles and in the Diocese of Arizona, as well as serving on the national council (as a chapter) for nine years, the first three as your Province President. I found myself at-large when I moved with my husband to Seattle in 2006 to be closer to our oldest son for his help in caring for my beloved husband of 46 years in the final years of his early onset Alzheimer’s disease. Andy died in October 2008 and I am working to figure out who I am as a widow. For almost 30 years I was employed by the church, in both administrative and pastoral positions. For years I wrote weekly devotional reflections for the (Yahoo prayer request) list, and I’ve contributed to both the DOK official website and that of the Episcopal Community. I love to write and to read, to walk and to dance.
In the Diocese of Olympia, I serve as DAL Chair. We are in formation of a Bishop’s Chapter to help connect DALs. We meet monthly, alternating Monday evenings and Saturday mornings, at locations throughout the diocese, with programming that is as simple as prayer and sharing to full blown presentations about the order. We encourage chapters to extend hospitality to DALs who are nearby.
It is an honor and a privilege to serve on the Province VIII Board on your behalf. The board is not only filled with awesome women who are extremely talented and capable, but they care deeply for Daughters-at-large.
I would love to hear your stories, to know you beyond your name and address, to hear of your spiritual journey, to learn how you became a member of the order, understand the circumstances that brought you to an at-large status, and how you live out your vows now. Please share with me.
May your Advent be filled with the anticipation of a wonderful, blessed year of prayer and service to our King, Jesus Christ, and his sons and daughters throughout the world.
With love, For His Sake-
Kathleen Nyhuis

1. Notify the National Office via the Transition Form, phone or email to Sharon Stills, Membership Coordinator, of your new status. Keep National Office informed about any changes of address, etc. Be certain that you are current in the payment of dues.
2. Notify the National DOK Chair and your Province contact person as listed above. She can put you in touch with your diocesan contact person if there is one in your diocese to be sure you are on their mailing list. She can tell you if there may be other DALs in your area.
3. Follow the Chapter link on this website to find out the chapter nearest you. Contact the church or chapter president, if listed, to introdude yourself.
4. You may stay in contact with other DALs through the Yahoo Groups email prayer list.
5. Wear your cross daily! It is a wonderful evangelism tool.
6. Continue faithfully in prayer...for your church, other Daughters, and all others in need. Perhaps you may want to start a chapter in your new church!
7. Look for ways to serve as you are able. Remember... BLOOM WHERE YOU ARE PLANTED!
For further questions, special prayer requests, a listening ear or suggestions please do not hesitate to contact me! We plan to expand our Daughters of the King website so that all of our Daughters at Large may have access to resources and materials for spiritual formation that you may miss by not being part of a Chapter.
We welcome your ideas!
FHS,
Chesley Vohden
